Are We There Yet?
Musings from Psalm 90:1-6
Imagine the prophet Moses fleeing for his life through the Egyptian Desert with over two million of his closest friends in tow. Moses was obeying God’s call to lead His people on a death-defying escape through the waters of the Red Sea. Carrying only a shepherd staff and faith in the God he served, Moses successfully leads his people through the Red Sea to a life of freedom, and training in the rugged Sanai desert.
Time passes slowly as Moses leads the Israelites and a mixed multitude of rabble-rousers on a road trip that will last forty years. God cares for His children, forgives their sins, and gives them miracle Manna to eat as they learn to trust Him for everything.
Moses chisels God’s commandments on stone tablets hoping His people will follow in the path of righteousness. Sadly, the desires of God’s people are carnal, and their patience wears thin. They are unthankful yet God patiently reminds them “And I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn out on your feet.” (Deuteronomy 29:4)
Tired of the squabbles, unbelief, and rebellion Moses seems to hit a wall in Psalm 90. I imagine his desperate cry to God for encouragement saying (my words), “Can I get a little help here Lord?” Moses reveres God and His eternal presence in the world, but I cannot help wondering if Moses is thinking, is this all there is? My life’s work and I end, cut down like a withered blade of grass?
God does the heavy lifting – Friend, are you weary in the journey you are on? Take a moment to consider where you are now in your life and where you would like to be. What might you do from here to make a difference?
